Rathole Radio

June 11th, 2009 by Dan

Hey folks, it’s been a looooong time since I updated this blog with any new music, and I thought I should let you know what’s going on right now. I’m still very busy with Linux Outlaws and other things, so recording that album I’ve threatened for years isn’t getting any closer. I’ve also started using danlynch.org as my main site (ooh get me) and eventually everything here will be transfered to danlynch.org/music to keep it simple. I’ll redirect the domain name and all so you should be able to find me easily. I am still working on music projects when I get time and writing new stuff. There are exciting things happening in the form of a new podcast and Internet radio show all about music called Rathole Radio. I’ve only done one episode so far but the next one is to follow this Sunday at 9pm UK time, see ratholeradio.org/live for details.

ratholeradio.org

I’m also playing live sessions on the show so you can hear new music from me on there. I just wanted to update this blog to make sure everyone knew and didn’t feel left out. My main focus music-wise for the next few months will be Rathole Radio and I hope you’ll enjoy it. I’m also playing demos, rare tracks and anything with a Free Culture angle on the show. Anything that I think is good musically and I can get away with playing legally. I’m aiming for a bit of a John Peel vibe to it, so if you have any suggestions or music you think I should listen to. Please do drop me a line. You can leave comments at ratholeradio.org or send email directly to – show AT ratholeradio DOT org

I’m not closing this blog but it may be a while before I can move everything to danlynch.org, so keep an eye on that for developments. I’m still doing music and will be active, eventually this site will redirect to a new home. I wanted to thank everyone for listening to the stuff I’ve posted here, writing such kind comments and generally being great to me. I appreciate it a lot and I hope we won’t lose anyone in the transition to the new home.

Take care and I’ll see you all very soon :)

Just When You Thought It Was Safe…

August 20th, 2008 by Dan

I’M BACK :) Wow it’s been a while, I just looked and it’s 3 months since I posted any new music, I didn’t realise how the time had passed sorry. Anyway, as I said I’m back and I have some new music for you, never before heard anywhere in the world.. ok maybe when I was recording it but apart from that never, honest.

It's a train, I'm so original

This is a song I wrote sometime around Christmas and to be honest I can’t remember how it came about. The main finger picking piece on the guitar is something I’ve been playing around with for a while, it’s not that complicated to play really but it sounds really impressive, the best things always do. It’s my weak attempt at imitating the kind of finger picking brilliance of Mark Knofler. I always really liked “Romeo & Juliet” by Dire Straights when I was a kid and that acoustic finger picking style really appealed to me. This was just intended to be an acoustic demo originally, something to get the idea recorded so I could add instruments and arrange it all later. Listening back now I don’t think adding more instruments would suit the song. It works pretty well as it is, so I’m gonna leave it. There’s just two acoustic guitars and one vocal track. The second guitar only comes in briefly to do a bit of a solo in the middle and that’s it, so essentially it’s just one guitar and vocal, sometimes simple works best. I have a tendency to get really into production and possibly overdo things a bit, gotta spread those ideas out a bit, make them go further hehe. No need for the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra on this one, sorry folks, they’ll be gutted. I’ve leave you to listen to the lyrics of the tune and work out what they mean for yourselves, it’s not too cryptic and hopefully makes some sense. It’s called “Trains” because it mentions trains in the lyrics and I couldn’t think of anything more inventive or profound at the time. Again I’m keeping it simple. Yeah that sounds better ;)

Hope you enjoy the song, leave me a comment to let me know what you think even if you hate it. All feedback is useful. I’m in the process of setting up a new digital studio at the moment which I hope to make open source, you can read about it here. I do have some plans to try and get some recording done in the next fortnight though, so I hope to update with some more new tunes in the coming weeks. Look out for those, take care of yourselves till then, Dan.

Is This Thing On?

December 28th, 2007 by Dan

Hi folks, welcome to my new music blog. I’ve been a musician since I was young and I play a few different instruments, some well, some not so well. Anyway, I’ve been recording stuff in my home studio for years and record production is a big passion of mine. I thought I’d share new tracks with you all through this blog, you can subscribe to the RSS feed and anytime I post a new track or an update you can get it delivered, cool hey? I’m going to try and build up an album through the blog and document how I get on as I record each track. I’m a pretty busy guy and I do many other things such as writing, podcasting, programming… err… drinking tea and loads of other important stuff. So I’ll try and update this with new tracks at least every two weeks but we’ll see how it goes. I’ve got plenty of back catalog stuff to work through anyway.

I’ve been in many bands over the years but not done much on my own, I like to have someone else to hide behind normally but it’s probably time I came out of the shadows and…

Bass Time

where are you going? Oh ok I’ll stay in the shadows and just direct the music in your direction then, better? Good ;) I hope you like the tracks and please feel free to leave some comments, “more cowbell!!” that kind of thing :)

See you on the flip side,

Dan
