Just When You Thought It Was Safe…

I’M BACK :) Wow it’s been a while, I just looked and it’s 3 months since I posted any new music, I didn’t realise how the time had passed sorry. Anyway, as I said I’m back and I have some new music for you, never before heard anywhere in the world.. ok maybe when I was recording it but apart from that never, honest.

It's a train, I'm so original

This is a song I wrote sometime around Christmas and to be honest I can’t remember how it came about. The main finger picking piece on the guitar is something I’ve been playing around with for a while, it’s not that complicated to play really but it sounds really impressive, the best things always do. It’s my weak attempt at imitating the kind of finger picking brilliance of Mark Knofler. I always really liked “Romeo & Juliet” by Dire Straights when I was a kid and that acoustic finger picking style really appealed to me. This was just intended to be an acoustic demo originally, something to get the idea recorded so I could add instruments and arrange it all later. Listening back now I don’t think adding more instruments would suit the song. It works pretty well as it is, so I’m gonna leave it. There’s just two acoustic guitars and one vocal track. The second guitar only comes in briefly to do a bit of a solo in the middle and that’s it, so essentially it’s just one guitar and vocal, sometimes simple works best. I have a tendency to get really into production and possibly overdo things a bit, gotta spread those ideas out a bit, make them go further hehe. No need for the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra on this one, sorry folks, they’ll be gutted. I’ve leave you to listen to the lyrics of the tune and work out what they mean for yourselves, it’s not too cryptic and hopefully makes some sense. It’s called “Trains” because it mentions trains in the lyrics and I couldn’t think of anything more inventive or profound at the time. Again I’m keeping it simple. Yeah that sounds better ;)

Hope you enjoy the song, leave me a comment to let me know what you think even if you hate it. All feedback is useful. I’m in the process of setting up a new digital studio at the moment which I hope to make open source, you can read about it here. I do have some plans to try and get some recording done in the next fortnight though, so I hope to update with some more new tunes in the coming weeks. Look out for those, take care of yourselves till then, Dan.

Thanks man, glad you like it. I think it works as it is, putting other instruments on there would just drown out the guitar anyway I think.

No thanks for reminding me, I haven’t updated in a month I need to sort that out. Haven’t got much new stuff I’d really be happy to release as yet but there’s plenty in the back catalogue and a couple of acoustic covers. I’ll get that sorted ASAP ;)

Bloomin eck! I must have missed this post. What a great tune. Definitely like the style of that. Some great feeling in there. Keep up the good work. I remember hearing a story about a session guitarist booked for an album. He got out his guitar and asked to hear the tunes. On hearing them he packed up his guitar again. The producer was getting annoyed and said. ‘Why the hell are you packing up?’ He just replied ‘Those tunes are perfect as they are, so you don’t need me’. He still got paid apparently.

How is the studio going then?

I might even pop around with my guitar and ask you to record some of my stuff soon!

Wow interesting story, I can believe that would be true. The studio still needs some work but I haven’t had time to do much lately, I’ll get back to it soon and it’s still at a state where I can record your stuff if you want. That would be very cool, I’d like that. Let me know when you have a date and time in mind and I’ll book a session… hehe I like saying that cos it sounds all professional but basically come over with the guitar sometime and I’ll do it. It’s no problem :)

@Nathan – Thanks dude, I really appreciate it. I need to sort myself out and produce more music. I’ve been threatening to do an album for years but always get sidetracked. Maybe this year, fingers crossed :)
